Edgewood's emphasis on proper scheduling and the efficient overlap of the Phases decreases your time to "move in" to your new log home. Design complexity, custom elements, and site requirements may lengthen your construction process, but you can help save time by coming to us with specific design ideas or by being open to our suggestions. The average time to "move in" is between 6 months and 1 1/2 years.

Phase I — The Planning Phase (six months to two years)

A. You develop conceptual ideas regarding location, size, style, budget, and schedule for your home, estate, lodge, etc.

    The Difference with Edgewood:

1. Location The locations of many of Edgewood's projects are in resort areas in the West and Southwest, but Edgewood has built in some of the most remote locations in the U.S. and internationally. A benefit for clients in any location, especially the East and other countries, is that due to this experience in remote locations, Edgewood has developed an incredibly thorough materials documentation and assembly instruction package. Also, Edgewood uses larger logs, which are more predominant in the West.

2. Style There are many factors to consider for the style of your log home from the type of log construction method to all of the fine details.

  • Edgewood offers a variety of species of logs including Lodgepole, Idaho White Pine, Western Larch, White Fir, and Western Red Cedar.
  • "Milled or handcrafted?" Edgewood guarantees that every single square inch of visible log area is draw-knifed, or peeled by hand. Completely milled logs, which some other companies use, will give your home a "manufactured" look.

3. Budget Cost figures for an Edgewood home vary depending on the design, style, the complexity of the plan and finish, the amount of handcrafting and custom work, diameter of the logs, and other custom features.

B. You begin the research and education process on building a log home. You'll make initial contacts and gather information from architects, designers, log companies, and contractors, etc. The results of this education phase have a profound effect on the conceptual decisions you make in addition to the log home company and other professionals you chose to hire.

    The Difference with Edgewood:
  1. Edgewood is a group of leading designers, architects, and builders consolidated into a staff of experts in log homes; our process, work environment, and team approach encourage creativity and efficiency in designing and building your home.

C. Actual design work begins. It is important to manage this phase in concert with all key players (designer, builder, log company, owner).

    The Difference with Edgewood:
  1. The benefit of choosing Edgewood is that the management of these professionals is simplified because our team members are "under one roof" and are in constant contact with one another and with you throughout this vitally important phase.

Phase II The Contract and Production Phase (three to twelve months)

A. You select and contract with your log home company.

    The Difference with Edgewood:
  1. This is a major decision and we hope you did your homework on a variety of log home companies to see the differences that set Edgewood above the rest the creation of an elegant home that is stunningly beautiful, structurally sound, and perfectly suited to you.

B. This step includes initial estimates, log design, and consultation.

    The Difference with Edgewood:
  1. Edgewood's designers are experts in the world's most advanced C.A.D. log design software. See your custom log home design as it evolves and take a virtual tour of your home before it's even built.
  2. Edgewood is the first and only log home company to insist that all projects be reviewed and stamped by a structural engineer licensed in the state of construction.

C. The log preparation and handcrafting processes are completed.

    The Difference with Edgewood:
  1. Edgewood hand finishes every log used in your home by a method called draw-knifing, or hand peeling. Because Edgewood insists on using the more resilient heartwood (center-cut) for the walls, which are most exposed to the elements, we first machine the wall logs and then completely draw-knife them to maintain a consistent hand-crafted look throughout the entire home.
  2. Edgewood saws a kerf in our wall logs to reduce stress and checking to an absolute minimum. A borate-based treatment is then applied; it is a non-toxic and naturally occurring substance that helps protect the logs from rot, fungus, and mildew, and renders the wood indigestible to insects.
  3. The entire structural log roof system is handcrafted in our yard from the finest Idaho Western Larch dry logs before delivery to your site in its most builder-friendly form.

Phase III — The On-Site Construction Phase (nine to eighteen months)

A. The log package is prepared for shipment.

    The Difference with Edgewood:

1. Edgewood develops a very precise reference and assembly manual for each structure to ensure efficient assembly and includes an exact list of all inventory. For custom full-scribe roof structures, we pre-assemble them in our logyard because their design and construction can be very intricate.

  2. For our weather tight shell package, all of the materials including logs, windows, doors, etc., will arrive at the construction site on an efficient schedule. This staging of deliveries provides just the right materials at the right time, keeping the site clear and the vulnerable materials safe and clean.

B. You select the log professionals to work at the site.

    The Difference with Edgewood:
  1. Edgewood can provide on-site log assembly service or a working supervisor anywhere in the world. We can also assist you in selecting a general contractor.

C. Construction begins with site excavation and the foundation.

    The Difference with Edgewood:
  1. Edgewood has the plans for your home certified by a structural engineer. The professionalism that Edgewood's design staff brings to the production of your construction documents ensures that this package of information is easy to understand, bid on, and build with. This saves your contractor time and saves you money.

D. Shell assembly and the interior/exterior finish are the final steps.

    The Difference with Edgewood:
  1. Edgewood's one-of-a-kind fastening method ensures superior structural quality and integrity. We use large diameter lag bolts (1/2 inch in diameter) spaced 24 inches (minimum) apart in every single log. This method allows us to tightly compress the logs to nearly eliminate overall settling in the walls. Your home will not require screw jacks, slip joints, trim strips, or any other of the labor-intensive elements required in other "non-compressed" log structures. In addition, your designer and sub-trades can enjoy working with a product that is no different (from a settling standpoint) than other conventional construction mediums. Masonry fireplaces, full walls of glass, and cabinets can be installed securely to the log walls without worry.
  2. Once the main shell package/structural elements are built, all of the details for your Edgewood personal masterpiece will be added. Options include ornate hand-carved doors, a log railing or stair system, decking, a custom mantel or any other element that will add to your enjoyment of your new home.
